French Press Cozy Tutorial

Greetings!
Along about 6 months or so ago, I sewed a cozy for a french press. It was a present for my sister in law, Laura, and was entirely her idea. I just happened to have some fabric on hand *cough, cough*.
Here is a tutorial so you, too, can have your very own cozy.

Besides a sewing machine and pair of scissors, you will also need the following:



Supply list:

• strip of fabric, plus the same amount for the reverse side.
• Cotton batting
• Insul-bright™ or comparable heat reflective batting.
  
• Button
• ~3" of 1/8" elastic
• thread

Ready?

First you need to make a pattern.


Draw a 15" x 5" rectangle.
On one end, find the center and mark 1" on either side ("a"s). On the same side, mark 3.75" from the corners towards the middle of the fabric ("b"s). Cutting on the line drawn from the "a to b"s will create the taper that will wrap through the handle of your press and eventually fasten to the button.
(I also tapered the other end very slightly, for ease in wrapping against the press handle.)

Cut out 1 copy of your fabric, lining fabric, cotton batting and insul-bright™ from your pattern.



To the wrong side of your lining fabric, pin first the insul-bright™, then the batting.



Sew with a 1/4" seam allowance.

To reduce bulk, zig zag the seam allowance. (this isn't shown in the pics)

Next, make a loop of elastic, loop facing in, ends to the edge of taper. To secure, zig zag close to edge of fabric.





With right sides together, pin fabric and lining fabric.

Sew, leaving a gap along one long side to turn inside out. Be careful not to let elastic slip into seam allowance!
Trim corners.
Turn inside out, press, and topstich all around to secure opening and to provide your tea cozy a tidy look!



Finally, fit the cozy on your french press and mark placement of button.
Sew on button.
Voila!
A new cozy!
